Most people don’t come into a chiropractic clinic because something suddenly went wrong.
They come in because something has been building for a while.
A bit of tightness that never fully goes away.
Energy that doesn’t quite return, even after rest.
A body that feels… off, but hard to explain.
When you ask how long it’s been there, the answer is often the same:
“Honestly, I’m not sure.”
That’s the interesting part.
Because the body is rarely unclear.

We Don’t Lose Signals — We Replace Them

A runner, for example, might head out for what used to be a simple run. Years ago, pace was guided by breath, by stride, by that subtle sense of effort building in the body. You knew when to slow down because you could feel it.
Now there’s a watch involved.
Pace. Heart rate. Distance. Zones.
None of this is inherently a problem. But something shifts. Attention moves from inside the body to outside of it.
The run is no longer guided by sensation, but by data.
And over time, something quiet happens:
the internal sense of effort becomes less familiar.
Not gone—just less practiced.
This Starts Earlier Than We Think
You can see the same pattern at the very beginning of life.
A child learns to use the toilet by feeling internal signals—pressure, timing, the need to go. That awareness develops through feedback.
But when that feedback is softened or removed—when the body can act without consequence—the learning slows.
Not because the child isn’t capable.
But because the signal doesn’t need to be noticed.
The body adapts to what is required of it.
And increasingly, in modern environments, very little internal awareness is required.
The Reflex to Escape Ourselves
Fast forward a few years.
Someone is sitting on a couch for a moment with nothing to do. There’s a flicker of restlessness—subtle, physical. A slight agitation in the chest, a sense of wanting to move or engage.
Before that feeling fully forms, a phone is already in their hand.
Scroll. Tap. Watch.
The sensation disappears almost instantly.
Not resolved—just replaced.
What used to be experienced as boredom was actually a collection of internal signals asking for change. Movement. Thought. Action.
Now those signals rarely get airtime.
And without repetition, the ability to notice them weakens.
When the Body Finally Gets Through
By the time most people notice their body, it’s no longer subtle.
It’s pain.
At that point, the instinct is immediate: get rid of it.
Take something. Suppress it. Push it down enough to keep going.
Again, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Sometimes that’s appropriate.
But when this becomes the default response, something important gets interrupted.
Because symptoms are not just problems to eliminate—they’re outputs of a system that has been adapting for a while.
If earlier signals were missed, the body doesn’t stop communicating.
It just turns up the volume.
And if those louder signals are also consistently silenced, the relationship with the body becomes even more distant.
You’re no longer responding to signals.
You’re reacting to disruptions.

What This Looks Like in Practice
This is where it becomes visible.
Someone sits in front of me and describes constant tightness—but they can’t tell when it builds, or what changes it.
Another person feels “stressed,” but it’s vague—no clear sense of where that lives in their body.
Movement feels stiff, but only once it’s already restricted.
The pattern is consistent:
awareness comes late.
From a clinical perspective, that matters.
Because when awareness is low, compensation runs the show.
The body will keep adapting—redistributing load, altering movement, tightening where it needs stability. It’s incredibly effective in the short term.
But over time, those adaptations become the problem.
And without clear internal feedback, they go unnoticed until they’re harder to unwind.
Reconnection Isn’t Complicated — It’s Unfamiliar
What’s interesting is that nothing here is broken.
The system still works.
People don’t need to learn interoception from scratch—they need to start using it again.
That might look like a runner occasionally switching the watch off and pacing by breath and effort.
Or sitting in a moment of boredom just long enough to feel what’s actually there, instead of immediately escaping it.
Or noticing a symptom without instantly trying to silence it—just long enough to ask, what led to this?
These aren’t big interventions.
But they reintroduce something that’s been missing:
a direct relationship with the body.
Where Chiropractic Fits In
Sometimes, though, that connection doesn’t come back just through attention.
If a joint hasn’t been moving well for a long time, or an area has been under constant tension, it can effectively drop off the map.
You don’t feel it—not because it’s fine, but because the signal has become unclear.
Chiropractic helps restore that brain-body connection.
As movement improves and the brain-body pathways become less disorganized, those areas start to “come back online.” People often notice it quickly—
they feel more, not less.
More awareness.
More distinction between tension and ease.
Earlier signals.
That’s the system recalibrating.
